Open Educational Resources

HANDOUT FOR Searching and Using Open & Copyrighted content in (online) courses

STEP 1. SEARCHING RE-USABLE CONTENT

  1. REUSABLE OPEN CONTENT: CREATIVE COMMONS, PUBLIC DOMAIN, OPEN ACCESS, OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OER) – FREE

1.1. Images. General search via:

  • org
  • Via Google > Click ‘Images’ (Dutch: ‘Afbeeldingen’) > Click ‘ Tools’ > ‘Usage Rights’ (Dutch: ‘Gebruiksrechten’)

Medical subject via:

  • Journal articles: PubMed add to your query: (“creative commons” OR “CC-BY” OR “loattrfree full text”[sb]) NB: Clicking (the PubMed filter) ‘Free full text’ generates less results.
  • Anatomy: anatomytool.org

ALWAYS CHECK IF THE ITEM HAS A CC (CREATIVE COMMONS)-LICENSE (OR IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN)

  1. LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC LICENSED CONTENT – (ACCESS VIA ULCN/DIGITAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:BRIGHTSPACE (DLE) – ALREADY PAID BY LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC (LU)
  • i. e-books, journal articles, newspapers, audiovisual material: search at catalogue.leidenuniv.nl (‘how to add’  > see below at ‘PERMALINK’).
  1. OTHER ONLINE CONTENT WHICH IS (legally) FREE ACCESSIBLE ? FREE IF YOU LINK, COSTS INVOLVED IF YOU COPY
    • Search via Google (Scholar), PubMed, Researchgate; webpages, images, YouTube video’s.
    • Re-use is free if you link (or embed w/o saving), and don’t copy (upload) to the DLE
  2. OTHER CONTENT ? COSTS INVOLVED
    • Images from (study/hand)books, all material from Leiden non-licensed content, access restricted websites, etc.

STEP 2: WHAT KIND OF RE-USE IS ALLOWED ? CHECK THE LICENSE

Check on the web page (of the found content) what kind of license it holds to see if re-use is allowed:

  1. REUSABLE OPEN CONTENT: CREATIVE COMMONS, PUBLIC DOMAIN, OPEN ACCESS, OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OER) – FREE
  • Public Domain (incl. CC0): re-use allowed and referring to source-creator is optional.
  • Creative Commons (6 types, abbreviated: CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-NC-SA, CC-BY-ND, CC-BY-NC-ND) reuse allowed with specific license conditions. Check at org/licenses (Dutch: creativecommons.nl/uitleg)
  1. LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC LICENSED CONTENT – (ACCESS VIA ULCN/DIGITAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:BLACKBOARD (DLE) – ALREADY PAID BY LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC (LU)

  1. OTHER ONLINE CONTENT WHICH IS (LEGALLY) FREE ACCESSIBLE ? FREE IF YOU LINK, COSTS INVOLVED IF YOU COPY
    – For IMAGES: in the browser rightclick on the image and copy-paste image address/location (f.i.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5738087/figure/Fig1/ )
    – To a VIDEO:  (f.i. at YouTube click ‘Share’) copy/past URL in (your document) on the DLE (f.i.
    https://youtu.be/OHE1ig4k64M ).
    – EMBEDDING IMAGES/VIDEOS: In Word/PPT documents (to put on the DLE): Insert picture > Change INSERT into > ‘LINK TO FILE’ (w/o local saving of the content!).

  1. Free access to content does not mean you are allowed to put the content in the DLE. No notifications on Copyright means that the content is Copyrighted !
ONLY PLACE A LINK (IN YOUR DOCUMENT) IN THE DLE -> NO COSTS INVOLVED.
  2. OTHER CONTENT ? COSTS INVOLVED
  • Request content owner for permission to publish on the DLE. If permission is granted mention full source information (Check at STEP 3.2.) and mention that permission by content owner (name) is granted.
  • Maximum 50 pages and max. 25% of a publication (within 1 course), part of the Easy Access Agreement.
Only allowed within the DLE (or in a printed reader) and prices at stichting-uvo.nl/nl/Tarieven_2
  • For re-use over 50 pages/25% you have to request Stichting UVO permission to publish.

STEP 3: USING MATERIALS AND REFERRING TO ITS  SOURCE IS MANDATORY

  1. CONTENT YOU HAVE CREATED YOURSELF

Mention author and the license you have added (see types at STEP 2.1). Choose license via creativecommons.org/choose. Usable on Wikipedia: CC BY or CC BY SA. Also see: https://creativecommons.org/faq/#choosing-a-license. F.i: ‘By Marieke de Groot, LUMC, license: CC BY NC SA

  1. REUSABLE OPEN CONTENT: CREATIVE COMMONS, PUBLIC DOMAIN, OPEN ACCESS, OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OER) – FREE

You are allowed to download and re-use content with a Creative Commons- or Public Domain license.

If the Creative Commons license has the attribution ND; you are not allowed to adapt the content.

If the Creative Commons license has the attribution SA; you have to publish the content with the same license type as the license type of the original content.

Example: ‘Source https://anatomytool.org/content/slagter-drawing-zenkers-diverticulum-no-labels
Drawing Zenker’s diverticulum – no labels” by Ron Slagter, license: CC BY-NC-SA

LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC LICENSED CONTENT – (ACCESS VIA ULCN/DIGITAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:BLACKBOARD (DLE) – ALREADY PAID BY LEIDEN UNIVERSITY-LUMC  (LU)

Provide full source information: author, title, publication year, source name (journal/book title), for journal: issue/volume/pp. and the publisher. A Permalink is preferred instead of uploading in the DLE (Permalink: click  at the catalogue record and copy-paste the ‘Permalink’ in the (document in) the DLE).
Example: https://catalogue.leidenuniv.nl/permalink/f/1e3kn0k/TN_medline30476963

  1. OTHER ONLINE CONTENT (outside Leiden collection) WHICH IS (LEGALLY) FREE ACCESSIBLE ? FREE IF YOU LINK, COSTS INVOLVED IF YOU COPY

  • Paste/embed the URL:
    • Paste url as text on page in DLE, or
    • Images embedding in DLE: ‘insert/edit image’. Paste the url of the image
    • Video embedding in DLE:: ‘insert/edit embedded media’. Paste the url of the video.

  1. OTHER CONTENT ? COSTS INVOLVED
Provide full source information: author, title, publication year, source name (journal/book title), for journal: issue/volume/pp. and the publisher.

Presentatie 2019-06-04 Workshop OWC LUMC ‘Van Copyright naar Open Educational Resources’ v5

Belowmentioned list of open educational resources was compiled for the SurfNet Project Anatomy TOOL2  https://anatomytool.org/TOOL2

Please check on every item
if you are allowed to reuse, remix and publish (if you are allowed to share it on a website  (even a dedicated website like BrightSpace)
(unfortunately the list is not screen-fitted, but it will take too much manually editing to fit)
